The subject of this week’s player spotlight are national prospects Matt Bewley and Ryan Bewley. The twins have seen their stock soar after their freshmen campaigns and have been dominant for Team Breakdown this summer. Matt is ranked the 9th best prospect in the country for the Class of 2023 on ESPN and Ryan is ranked 14th. Ryan talked about how he has handled the pandemic and how it has felt to return back to playing with Breakdown. 

“We go to the park and sometimes we workout in front of my house since we have a basketball hoop at our house,” said Ryan Bewley. “It feels good to be playing again, it is great going back out there and showing people my talent and how good I am.”

South Florida has seen a recent surge in national prospects. Matt and Ryan are already being nationally recruited and are the highest rated prospects in South Florida. They already hold offers from Auburn, Florida State, Florida, Alabama, St.John’s , Depaul, Iowa State, South Florida and Illinois. Ryan discussed how special the situation of being nationally ranked alongside his brother is. 

“It is a great feeling knowing that I have someone in my house pushing me everyday,” said Matt Bewley. “We keep each other grounded and humbled to work hard and not lose our place.”

The twins are both 6-foot-9 and led Northeast to a regional semifinal appearance last season. They are part of a loaded Northeast roster that includes Wesley Cardet, and JJ Harris. They should be one of the top teams in Florida this season. Ryan discussed his goals for this season and what he feels the strengths of his game are. 

 “My goals are to win states, City of Palms, and just being the best player that I can be,” said Ryan Bewley. “My strengths are getting to the basket, playing defense, post moves, I pass very well at my size, and I can shoot.”

Team Breakdown has been playing steadily for the past few weeks. It has been impressive to see how Matt and Ryan have shined playing in 17u one summer removed from dominating the middle school circuit. Matt discussed what he loves the most about the game of basketball and how he has handled the unique basketball landscape this summer due to Covid-19. 

“I love everything about the game of basketball, but what I love the most is the competitive spirit the game brings and winning,” said Matt Bewley. “I have worked on my game the same as if we did not have the pandemic but I have been working very safely.”

The twins bring a ton of versatility, talent, and athleticism to the court. They complement each other great on the floor. Ryan is dominant inside and is already an extremely impactful defender. He plays with a great motor, and displays a steadily improving perimeter game. He talked about his love for the game of basketball and handling all the attention he and his brother are receiving at such a young age. 

”What I love most about basketball is just winning and working hard and being the best that I can be,” said Ryan Bewley. “I feel like it is a good thing that people are saying all these great things about us, but all we can do is be humble and stay focused on what we need to do and where we wanna be in the future.”

Matt has been extremely impressive throughout his still young career as well. He has played as a point forward some this summer and brings such a unique skill set. He is talented in every aspect of the game and it is scary to think of the heights his game can reach. He talked about his goals for this season and his experience of playing this summer. 

 “It feels good that I have been able to show my talents on the floor this summer,” said Matt Bewley.  If we are able to play basketball this season my goal is to win states for my school and be the best player in Broward County.” 

The Bewleys are supremely talented prospects that love being in the gym. They are already so talented that it is unbelievable that they are only entering their sophomore campaigns. It will be truly special to follow the careers of these special young men the next three seasons. It is often an overused expression in sports but these two young athletes truly have limitless potential.
