The subject of this week’s player spotlight is standout Christopher Columbus guard Reggie “RJ” Luis. The rising senior has been playing his travel basketball with SOH Elite and has been gaining a lot of attention for his play in the past few weeks. He was a top performer at the On the Radar Power 24 and on the Prep Hoops Circuit. He described his experience at those events to HoopMIA.

“The last few weeks it has felt great to be back on the court hooping,” said Luis. “Just to be able to compete and show my new skill set. I felt very good about my performance and my development thus far, but I feel like there’s a whole other level that I have not reached yet.”

The 6-foot-5 guard averaged 15 points and 9 rebounds per game for Columbus last season. He had several big nights last season including several 30 and 20 point performances. He returns to Columbus for his senior season in which he is expected to be one of the top players in Dade County. He talked about his goals for his final High School season.

“My goals for my senior season are that I want to bring back a district championship to Columbus, and go on a potential run to states. By the end of this year I assure you people will remember my name.”

RJ has faced the challenge of the difficult basketball landscape as an effect of the Covid 19 pandemic. It has cost him the Live Periods that college prospects like him usually get to compete in and a summer of team high school camps. He described how he has tried to develop as a basketball player throughout these times.

“I saw the whole COVID situation as a chance to take an advantage over others who probably were not working as hard as me. I have been training with ADELS RCH, which is my dads program. We focused on developing my craft and taking my game to the next level. I am getting stronger and faster. I was able to put on 20 pounds of muscle during this time.”

Luis is a talented prospect that has a lot of quality traits. He is a good scorer that plays with great pace. He is great at attacking the rim and has a very developed mid range game. Defensively he uses his length to be a disruptive defender and is an elite rebounder for a guard. He described what he enjoys the most about the game of basketball.

“I love the competition, the thrill, the energy and the excitement that the game brings. Also I love the atmosphere the crowd brings, which makes the game a lot of fun and even more competitive.”

Luis is certainly a prospect that college coaches should be following closely. He is definitely a Division 1 talent and has the potential to keep growing as a player. He talked about the current situation in his recruitment.

“As far as my recruiting status, I am getting heavy interest from the Ivy League and CAA schools (D1 mid major). With the help of my travel coaches at SOH Elite and my high-school Coach Andrew Moran my recruitment is ongoing.”

RJ is one of the top players in South Florida and we are interested to see what heights his game can reach as a senior. He is a unique talent that can fill up a box score in a variety of ways and it is clear that his best basketball is still ahead of him.
