The subject of this week’s HoopMIA player spotlight is Christopher Columbus shooting guard Hubertas Pivorius. He moved to the United States this past summer from Vilnius in Lithuania, which is the capital city. He averaged 14.2 points per game and established himself as one of the best shooters in South Florida. He talked about the style of basketball in South Florida and how he adjusted to it. 

“It took some time to adjust to US basketball first, because it's based on your individual skills and a physical game, rather than the strategic approach in Europe,” said Pivorius. “But as time went on, I got used to it and I believe I did a great job fitting into the team and helping win games.”

Pivorius made 72 triples for the Explorers while shooting 43 percent from three. He is able to shoot in transition, off actions, and off the bounce. He can light up the scoreboard in a hurry. The 6-foot-1 junior has a quick release and when left open he terrorizes opposing defenses. He heads into his senior season as probably the best shooter in the city of Miami. He talked about the strengths of his game and what he is looking to improve upon. 

“I believe I stand out from others as a shooter that can make and create different shots, as well as creating opportunities for other players. I am also a team player. I still need to get stronger in order to be able to drive when others put pressure on me, and I also want to become more of a playmaker.”

The talented guard was slated to play this travel season with the Miami Impact Rebels. The Covid-19 pandemic has thrown the offseason into chaos and there is no telling when basketball will fully resume. Hubertas talked about how he is handling the situation and his love for the game of basketball.

“During this lockdown I am trying to get stronger, working on my ball handling, and improving my overall physical condition. Also trying to watch a lot of games and learn from the best players out there. Basketball is a sport, which makes me want to compete, win, and be better than the other person or the other team. Also, being in a team makes it really fun because you have other guys to back you up, and you watch yourself grow as a family. That's why I love it. The drive to outwork someone, and be better than them.” 

He excelled this season under first year Columbus head coach Andrew Moran. Pivorius was a great fit in the Explorers’ open offense and improved throughout the season. He is a foundation of the Columbus program and is set for a big senior campaign. Coach Moran talked about the type of player and person Pivorius is. 

“Hubertas is the type of player every coach wants on their team,” said Moran. “He is very coach able and has a very high basketball IQ. Maybe the best shooter I have coached and one of the best shooters in the county.”

Hubertas’ skillset is constantly improving. He emerged as a ball handler for Columbus in the second half of the season and has progressed significantly as a playmaker since first arriving in Miami. He is capable of being an All-County type player next season and being one of the best overall players in South Florida. He discussed what his goals are headed into his senior year. 

“The goals for the next season would be to be the best team as we possibly can be, and become as close as we possibly can,” said Pivorius. “In my opinion we are going to win our district, region and head to states. With the seniors being out and me becoming a senior, I want to lead the team and set an example to others so everyone could be the best version of themselves.”

Pivorius is an exciting player that meticulously works on his craft. As he develops his overall game as a guard he will continue to rise as a prospect, but he is already an elite shooter. It will be captivating to see how well he will perform as a senior and how far he can lead the Explorers.
