The subject of this week’s HoopMIA player spotlight is Pembroke Pines Charter standout Osei Price. He has been one of the primary reasons the Jaguars are one of the top teams in South Florida. The senior is a legitimate division 1 prospect and he is making his mark in the South Florida hoops scene after transferring to Pines from Montverde in the summer. He talked about what he feels makes him a top player and which aspects he is working on.

“The strengths of my game are getting on ball steals, getting to the basket and finishing, getting shooters and teammates open, and hitting three point shots,” said Price. “I am working to improve my mid range jump shot.”

The Jaguars are off to a 17 and 1 start to the season and are one of the favorites to win a state title in 5a. The already have wins against top teams like Riviera Prep, Chaminade, and Boyd Anderson. They made a huge statement in their dominant performance at the Adidas Holiday Slam, in which they captured the tournament championship by going 4 and 0 without ever being seriously challenged. They seem to be on a collision course with Northeast, who is responsible for their only defeat of the season, to face off in the district championship and likely again in the regional playoffs. He described how Pines Charter has been able to be so successful this season.

“One of the keys to our season has been that we have a lot of scorers that are not selfish. We are good at getting out on fast breaks and using our athleticism. The team moves like a family so that leads to us playing well together.”

The 6-foot-5 senior has garnered a lot of colleges attention with his play and is hoping to make his school choice by March. He is a great athlete and plays the game with a lot of poise. He is great at finding easy baskets and has been a knockdown catch and shoot player this season. He is certainly a prospect that is only ascending and will continue to improve as a player. He talked about his current recruiting status and what he is looking for in his future destination.

“I currently have offers from the University of North Florida, Stetson, Canisius, and Bethune Cookman. Holy Cross, Dartmouth, Columbia, Brown, and Mercer are all recruiting me as well right now. I will be looking for a really good academic school to go along with the basketball aspect. I want a place where I can develop into being the best player I can be over my years there.”

Price was selected the most valuable player of the aforementioned Adidas Holiday Slam. He is sure to garner All-County and possibly All-State consideration when the season concludes. He is part of an extremely talented starting five that features Nova Southeastern commit Dallas Graziani, Amarachi Ujagbor, Javen Flowers-Smith, and Geoffrey Sprouse. He talked about what he hopes to accomplish for the rest of the season and what he loves about the game of basketball.

“My personal goal and team goal is the same and it is to not lose a game for the rest of the season. I also want to be committed by March to a division one college. The thing I love the most about basketball is winning. Being part of a close game and winning at the end is the best feeling.”

Price is an impressive prospect and a great fit for the next level on and off the court. He is one of the most exciting players to watch play in the South Florida area and has the potential to have a great college career. We look forward to seeing how his senior season wraps up and where he chooses to play his collegiate basketball career.
