*South Florida Region Preview: Class 7A


 

Braddock- District 16- Head Coach Willie Diaz- (Top Players- 2020 5’9 Jordan Lopez, 2021 5’11 Andy Chavez, 2021 6’5 Jorge Santos, 2021 6’2 Sebastian Paz, 2021 6’5 Nic Castaneda)

 

The Bulldogs are the biggest threat to Palmetto, who is the district’s heavy favorite. They have a talented group of 2021 players and it will be interesting to see if this group can emerge as a contender.  Santos and Paz played with South Florida Elite in the summer and are looking for breakout junior campaigns. Chavez is a playmaking guard that can get to the basket. Castaneda is a long forward that can stretch the floor. 

 

Coral Reef- District 16- Head Coach Glenn Hyatt- (Top Players- 2022 6’2 Levertis Williams Jr., 2020 6’4 Anthony Headley, 2021 5’11 Diego Fonte)

 

The Barracudas are vying to compete in District 16. Headley is a talented senior wing that will be counted on to be a top scorer. Williams is a great athlete that plays with great enthusiasm. He is transitioning to the point guard position for Reef. Fonte is a capable shooter looking for a breakout season. 

 

Ferguson- District 16- Head Coach Jose Andion- (Top Players- 2020 5’10 Jonathan Rawls, 2020 6’1 Anthony Perez, 2020 5’11 Jheier Azorca)

 

The Falcons are looking to make a run in District 16, which due to the new districts is up for grabs outside of the favorite Miami Palmetto. The have a trio of senior guards to lead the way. Rawls is a fast playmaker that really pushes the pace. Perez is a knockdown shooter that has really developed. Azorca is a tough guard that takes on a lot of roles for Ferguson.

 

Miami Palmetto- District 16- Head Coach Marcos Molina- (Top Players-2020 6’4 Kentron Portier, 2020 6’2 Jordan Lopez, 2021 6’6 Jacoby - District 14- Head Coach - (Top Players- Jacoby Brooks, 2021 6’3 Joel Aloma, 2021 6’0 Marcos Molina Jr., 2021 Saiyan Marley)

 

The Panthers are the overwhelming favorite in District 16 and one of the regional contenders to go to state. Portier, who stars in football as well, is the star of this group and impacts the game with his athleticism and motor. Lopez and Aloma are both great shooters and smart players that will stretch the floor for Palmetto. Molina takes over the point guard duties for this squad and has really improved his shooting. Brooks and Marley are talented junior wings that give Palmetto great length and athleticism. 

 

South Dade- District 16- Head Coach Ian Kallusingh- (Top Players- 2020 6’4 Robert Clarke, 2023 5’9 Jamari Dean)

 

The Buccaneers have a new coach this season and are looking to build around a young core. Clarke is a senior forward that is attracting college attention. He is solid down low and can initiate offense as well. Dean is a talented young guard that can score and pass. South Dade will try to contend with the rest of the district and challenge for a playoff spot.  

 

Columbus- District 15- Head Coach Andrew Moran- (Top Players-2023 6’6 Scottie Middleton, 2021 6’4 Reggie Luis, 2020 6’5 Brendan Golden, 2020 5’11 Alex Perez, 2020 6’4 Elijah Roberts)

 

Moran takes over the Explorers program and has them primed for a big season. Luis is a talented wing that can really score. Perez is a solid point guard and a winning player. Golden thrives as a stretch 4 for this group and had a big summer. Middleton has a tremendous ceiling and is already an impact player as a freshman. Roberts, who is a University of Miami commit in football, will bring toughness, rebounding, and an interior presence to this group. They are one of the contenders in an absolutely loaded District 15. 

 

Coral Gables- District 15- Head Coach Tico Govea- (Top Players-2022 6’6 Jimel Lane, 2022 6’5 Kuran Bryant, 2022 6’2 Rome Delgado, 2021 6’0 Desmond Romer, 2020 6’5 Walter Daniels)

 

The Cavaliers are loaded with talented underclassmen. Lane is a supreme athlete with a very high ceiling. He is great in transition and as his perimeter game improves so will his college ceiling. Bryant is a monster inside and plays as hard as anyone in South Florida. Delgado is very skilled and one of the best shooters on this team. Romer is a lightning fast point guard that plays with outstanding pace. Daniels is a hard nosed defender and has really improved his perimeter skills. They are the favorite in District 16, but it will be a battle. 

 

Miami High- District 15- Head Coach Javorie Wilson- (Top Players- 2021 6’5 Justin Neely, 2021 6’6 Taderrius Davis, 2021 6’3 Darius Fowler, 2020 5’8 Andre Bynum)

 

The Stings fresh off a district championship with their talented young core are ready for another big year. Neely is point forward that was first team All-County least season and is a very versatile player. Davis is an athletic and active wing that can stretch the floor. Fowler has become a consistent three point shooter and is a tough defender. Bynum, a transfer from Slam, is a fast and talented young point guard. Miami High is talented enough to make a run to Lakeland. 

 

Miami Beach- District 15- Head Coach Jacob Shaw- (Top Players- 2021 6’7 Craig Starks, 2021 6’4 Demetrius Patterson 2022 6’4 Lucas Gibbs, 2020 6’0 Noel Camejo)

 

The Hi-Tides are yet another contender in stacked District 15. They are led by a talented junior inside out combo of Starks and Patterson. Starks is a versatile forward with a big time ceiling. He is expanding his perimeter game and is set for a big season. Patterson is one of the county’s more underrated players and can fill up a stat sheet in a hurry. Gibbs is a knockdown shooter. Camejo is one of the leaders of this group and a great on ball defender. 

 

Miami Coral Park- District 15- Head Coach Alex Ordoqui- (Top Players-2020 6’1 Ga”khari Lacount, 2020 6’5 Jason Don, 2020 6’0 Andrew Lopez, 2020 5’10 Eddie Ramirez, 2021 6’3 David Pazo, and 2021 6’4 Adrian Salcedo)

 

The Rams are poised for a big season. They are led by Lacount who is one of the top players in South Florida. He is a three level scorer that can fill it up in a hurry. Ramirez and Lopez are hard nosed senior guards that are winners and together with Lacount they give Coral Park as good of a backcourt as you will find. Don is the man in the middle for them and plays with a great motor. Pazo and Salcedo are talented young wings that can really score. Coral Park is a contender is District 15 and have a chance to have the best season in school history. 

 

Southwest- District 15- Head Coach Raul Duany- (Top Players- 2020 6’0 Gilbert Gonzalez, 2020 5’9 Frank Cruz, 5’11 Joshua Fernandez)

 

The Eagles have a new coach and face the challenge of being in District 15, which is loaded with contenders. Gonzalez is a solid guard that will be counted upon to lead a young group. Cruz plays with great energy and is a capable shooter.

 

Dr. Krop- District 14- Head Coach Christopher Garcia- (Top Players-2020 6’5 Deshuan Joseph, 2020 6’6 Justin Reid, 2020 6’4 Ethan Amar, 2020 5’10 Isaiah Alexander)

 

The Lightning along with Miramar are the favorites in District 14. They are led by two talented senior wings in Joseph and Reid. Reid is possibly the best athlete in South Florida and plays with a love for the game. Joseph is a versatile wing that with a great pull up game. Amar is a long guard than can really stretch the floor. Alexander will be the point guard for this group and is looking to have a big season.  

 

Hialeah Gardens- District 14- Head Coach Daniel Garcia- (Top Players- 2020 6’0 Khalil Pierre, 2022 5’10 Jeremy Hoyos, 2022 6’6 Jordan Urbaez, 2022 6’6 Helquis Pulido)

 

The Gladiators have a young core that they hope can grow together and blossom into a great team. Pierre is the veteran for this group and will be counted on to run the offense and set the tone defensively. Pulido and Urbeaz are talented young wings that rebound well. Hoyos is a knockdown shooter and had a solid freshman season. 

 

Miramar- District 14- Head Coach - (Top Players- 2020 6’3 Brent Davis, 2022 6’5 Deshawn Jean Charles, 2022 6’5 Faheim Meran, 2021 6’0 Khamaury McMillan, 2021 Skye Poindexter)

 

The Patriots are primed for a run for Lakeland. Davis, a Citadel commit, is the heart and soul of Miramar. He is great at getting to the basketball and can really knockdown shots. Charles has really improved his perimeter skills and is set for a big sophomore season. Meran is a talented young guard with great size. Poindexter is a long wing that plays with great energy. McMillan is a tough guard that frees up Davis to score. The Patriots are the district favorite and have a talented young core around Davis. 

 

Reagan- District 14- Head Coach Alan Fernandez- (Top Players- 2020 6’3 Anthony Diaz, 2020 5’8 Luis Pena, 2021 5’11 Glenn Noel)

 

The Bison are looking to compete in the new District 14. Pena is the starting point guard for this group. Noel is a lightning quick guard that plays with great energy. He is set for a breakout season in his junior campaign. Diaz will be crucial to Reagan’s offense and defense. He is one of the taller and better athletes on the roster. 

 

Cooper City- District 13- Head Coach Christopher Allen- (Top Players- 2022 6’3 Elijah Wyche, 2021 6’4 Matthew Archey, 2022 6’0 Nathan Hickman)

 

Allen takes over for the Cowboys following the departure of Coach Kapel. Allen has been an assistant at Cooper City and has a young core to build around. Wyche will be the focal point of the Cowboys following the departure of star player Dallas Graziani to Pines Charter. Wyche is an active young forward with a big ceiling and made 3rd team All-County as a freshman last season. 

 

Cypress Bay- District 13- Head Coach Jason Looky- (Top Players- 2020 6’1 Brandon Garcia, 2020 6’0 Isaiah Quinteros)

 

The Lightning are always well coached and a contender for a district championship and this season is no different. Garcia is back after spending a season at Somerset and is ready for a huge senior season after injuring his knee last year. Garcia is a dynamic guard that fills up the stat sheet and has a great feel for the game. Quinteros is a great team player and fills a lot of roles for Cypress Bay. He is usually asked to guard the other teams top players and is a versatile scorer. 

 

Flanagan- District 13- Head Coach Cliff Mayers- (Top Players- 2020 6’0 Adam Sewnarine, 2020 6’2 Anthony Behring, 6’3 Jayson Heyliger, 6’0 Dylan Powell)

 

The Falcons are looking for a bounce back season in 2019. They are a member of the new district 13. They are led by Sewnarine, who played with Miami City Ballers in the summer, a skilled guard that really competes. Powell and Heyliger are looking to have breakout senior campaigns. 

 

Western- District 13- Head Coach Alen Hardy- (Top Players-  20201 6’0 Gavin Ostrow, 2020 6’3 Garrett Anderson. 2021 6’5 Michael Barbe)

 

The Wildcats have a new coach after the departure of Ken Kelly. They have a talented young point guard in Ostrow to lead the way. Ostrow is a pure point guard and can hit jumpers with consistency.  Anderson is a versatile scorer who had a big summer with the Broward County Cougars. Barbe is an active forward and plays with great energy. Western is one of the favorites in District 13.
