The subject of this week’s HoopMia player spotlight has come to South Florida on a mission. Jimel Cofer Jr. transferred to Schoolhouse prep this summer and has made an immediate impact and gained a lot of attention in fall league action. Cofer is a 2021 prospect and was one of the stand out performers at last week’s Warm Up event. He discussed why he choose to make the move and attend Schoolhouse.

“What weighed the most in moving to Schoolhouse was just being able to be in a new environment and play with and against different people,” said Cofer. “When we came to visit we saw how hard and how much work they were putting in and knew this was going to be a great place to get better and be.”

The 6 foot 4 junior transferred to Schoolhouse along with his brother Jayven Cofer, who is a top 2023 prospect, and they combine with Anthony Lopez, Cedrick Saint Jean and Jose Luis Benitez to form one of the state’s most talented and athletic backcourts. Cofer discussed his expectations and thoughts on Schoolhouse’s upcoming season.

“We have a lot of talent on our team and we are starting to blend and play together. I know as we go on into the season that we are going to get better, not only individually but also as a team. We are going to be really good. We are gonna have a great season and it is going to be fun to watch.”

Cofer is a lefty guard with great athleticism and strength. He is constantly playing above the rim and does an excellent job of making the game easy for his teammates. He is one of the most talented prospects in Miami regardless of class and has already gained a ton of college interest. He played this past summer with Mudiay Elite and is set for a monster junior campaign. He recapped his current recruiting status and what he will be looking for in a school.

“I have offers from Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Wichita State, Oklahoma state, Baylor, North Texas, Houston, Georgia State,Mercer, James Madison TCU FIU, FAU, UTSA and a few more. I have interest from schools like UCLA and Michigan State as well. I am looking for a program that will let me be me and play, get out in transition and is looking to push the ball.”

Cofer is on pace to be a Power 5 player and that is not something that happens often from a Miami area high school. He plays with great pace and is just scratching the surface on how good he can really be. He is expected to lead Schoolhouse Prep back to Lakeland, where they will try to capture the school’s first title. He talked about the strengths of his game and his personal expectations for this season.

“My biggest strengths are my explosiveness and ability to finish around the rim. I also take pride in how I make the people around me better on the court. I am working on improving my jump shot and my right hand finishes. My personal goal for the season is just to get better all around as a player as much as possible.”

Cofer is a truly special talent and it will be exciting to see how he develops and performs this upcoming season. He has limitless potential and is worth the price of admission when you go see him play. He wows spectators with high flying blocks and dunks and is set to prove how unique of a talent he is this upcoming season.
