South Florida Region Preview: Class 2A

HoopMIA will be previewing the upcoming high school season in a series of articles. Region 4 in Class 2a is the first group of teams we will cover. The teams listed below should be the top contenders in the region and feature a lot of the area’s top prospects.

Brito Miami Private

Head Coach: Alex Garcia

(Top Players- 2020 6’7 Keshawn Jones, 2022 6’8 Jesus Rivas, 2022 6’0 Brandon Garcia)

Alex Garcia, who runs the Miami City Ballers, takes over the Brito program this season and the Panthers look much improved. Rivas has great potential and will be a focal point of Brito’s offense and defense. Brandon Garcia, who is the coach's son, will be the ball handler and creator for the Panthers. He had a big summer playing for MCB and will look to have a breakout high school season.

Champagnat

Head Coach: Luis Morin

(Top Players- 2020 6’4 Melvin Diaz, 2020 5’9 Justice Galezo, 2020 6’3 Caleb Alic, 2022 6’4 Anthony Salazar)

The Lions lost a heartbreaker last season 55-54 in the regional final to Jupiter Christian. Coach Morin’s squad seems poised to be one of the region's top contenders once again. Galezo is a knockdown shooter and will be counted upon to replace scoring from some of last season’s departures. Diaz is one of the area’s top athletes and is worth the price of admission every night. Alic, a transfer from American, is an under the radar prospect who is set for a breakout year.

Grandview Prep

 Head Coach: Joe Dawson

 (Top Players- 2021 6’0 Harry Santiago, 2023 6’5 Nate Sasser, 2023 5’9 Jermaine Hunter)

The Pride have a young core that will look to establish the program back to one of South Florida’s elite. Harry Santiago is a new arrival from Miami Christian and looks to be the next great point guard from the Miami Tropics’ program. Sasser, who plays for the Nightrydas, is one of the top 2023 prospects in the state and has massive potential.

Miami Christian

 Head Coach: Christian Martinez

 (Top Players- 2020 6’5 Lorenzo Baldera, 2021 6’3 Jose Manuel, 2020 5’11 Gyasi Torres)

Coach Martinez takes over the Victors’ program following Coach Juan Cardona leaving for an assistant coaching position at Mercer University. Lorenzo Baldera is the lone familiar face for Victors and will be the focal point of the team this season. Manuel is a capable scorer. Miami Christian will have a solid season and should make the state playoffs.

Schoolhouse Prep

Head Coach: Colin Campbell

 (Top Players- 2020 6’4 Anthony Lopez, 2020 6’1 Jose-Luis Benitez, 2020 6’0 Cedrick Saint Jean, 2021 6’4 Jimel Cofer Jr., 2023 6'1 Jayven Cofer, 2021 6'7 Jehu Wright, 2021 6'11 Jabari Williams)

The Wolfpack are fresh off the school’s first appearance in Lakeland and will be the favorite to go to State from this region. Benitez is one of the best point guards in the city and is back to try and capture the school’s first state title. Lopez and Cofers are new arrivals and are all big time athletes with division 1 talent. The Wolfpack have elite athleticism and size across the board and will be one of the areas top teams regardless of class.

Northwest Christian

Head Coach: Jonathan Sapp

(Top Players- 2021 5’10 Sebastian Gaitan)

The Eagles are usually a program that features under the radar prospects. Gaitan, a transfer from Alonzo Tracy Mourning, will be counted upon this season to lead the team. Look for Coach Sapp’s squad to have an improved season and be a contender for the playoffs.

Village Academy

 Head Coach: Terrence Atkinson

(Top Players- 2020 6’3 Jose Passius, 2021 6’1 Shane Allen)

The Tigers’ season ended last year in a 61 to 52 loss to Champagnant Catholic in the regional semifinals. Passius and Allen are their top players and are poised to lead Village academy to a great season. Both players averaged double figures last season and should be very productive again.
