The subject of this week's HoopMIA player spotlight is one of the best prospects in the city of Miami and was a standout performer at this weekend’s 5th annual Warm-Up tournament. Jimel Lane, who transferred to Coral Gables this summer, was an impact performer and wowed spectators with his athletic ability and his high flying theatrics in transition. The class of 2022 standout talked about his experience at the event this weekend.

“My experience at the warm up was great,” said Lane. “I got to see what we were strong at and what we needed to work on as a team. It also helped because it helped us get familiar  know different defenses and how to adjust to them.”

Lane is part of an ultra athletic and talented group of prospects on the Cavaliers roster.  Kuran Bryant (2022), Rome Delgado (2022), Desmond Romer (2021), Walter Daniels (2020) round out the rest of the Gables’ starting five. They look to be one of the stronger teams in South Florida and after a 4-1 weekend and a championship win at the Warm-Up they displayed the type of performances they are capable of. Lane discussed his team’s potential.

“I feel like we are a good team but there is always room for improvement. I also think we are capable of winning our district this season.”

The 6 foot 6 prospect game is evolving. He displayed improved ball handling and shooting throughout the event. The progression of those skills will determine how high level of a prospect Lane can become. He already has elite athleticism and plays with a great motor. Lane’s talent should only mature and develop if he continues the pace he is on. The sophomore discussed his attributes.

“The strengths of my game is my transitional play on the offensive end and my mid range jumper. I am working on improving my defense and my three point shot.”

Lane played with E1T1 and the Warriors in the summer and will be a prospect that will be play his travel basketball on a big stage throughout his high school career. He is set for a breakout season with Coral Gables and used this past weekend as a platform to show his future potential. He discussed his personal goals for the upcoming season.

“My personal goal is to average twenty points per game. I also focus on getting my teammates involved in the game and helping them succeed.”

Coral Gables, who faced district rival Coral Park in a competitive and entertaining final, is part of one of the most talented districts in the state. Class 7a district 15 features Coral Gables, Coral Park, Miami High, Columbus, Miami Beach, and Southwest. If Sunday’s championship is a preview of what is to come, the district matchups will be a battle all season long. Lane and his fellow Cavalier teammates are the preseason favorite in the loaded district and will look to capture a district championship as a springboard for a run at a state title.

Lane has a chance to be a high level college basketball player and that is a rare thing. HoopMIA is excited to follow and watch the progression of one of the city’s young and elite talents.
