The subject of this week’s player spotlight is highflying guard David Perez. He is one of the top prospects in Miami and is ready for a huge senior season. Perez, who spent last season at University School, returns to Riviera Prep for his final season. The Bulldogs made it to the state final four and with the return of Perez are set to be one of the top contenders in 3a. Perez talked about his decision to return to Riviera.

“I felt that I had learned a lot from being over at University School and I am thankful for the opportunity I was given but it did not quite feel like home,” said Perez. “Here at Riviera, It is a different atmosphere and it is somewhere where I can challenge myself athletically and academically. It was my school for 9 years prior to leaving so it only felt right to go back.”

Perez played this summer with Miami Triple Threat and continues to garner interest from multiple college programs. He was a top performer at the Hoop Group Jamfest and showed off his playmaking ability and defense throughout the event. He discussed his experience of playing with Triple Threat this summer.

“Travel basketball was great with Miami Triple Threat. I got a lot of looks and interest from colleges. I got to meet and be around great people. I learned a lot as well.”

The 6’2 guard has a great mixture of academics, skill, and athleticism that make him a desired college prospect. He participated in the Dartmouth and Columbia elite camps over the summer. He talked about his attributes as a basketball player and his current recruiting status.

“I feel the strengths of my game are playmaking and finishing near the basket. I am being recruited by a couple of schools and I am beginning to know which ones are my favorites.”

Riviera Prep is one of the top contenders in 3a. Perez’s return to the Bulldogs, along with the talented duo of Esteban Lluberes and Osmar Garcia Araujo, gives Riviera one of the top trios of prospects in South Florida. Westminster Christian, Chaminade-Madonna, and Florida Christian figure to be the biggest obstacles in Riviera’s quest to return to Lakeland. Perez spoke about his team’s status heading into the season.

“I am excited for my last season. I am really excited in fact. We have a great and experienced team. We are battle tested and we will remind a lot of people what we are about. It is going to be a fun team to be around and fun to watch ourselves grow throughout the year.”

Perez, who averaged 22 points per game his sophomore season at Riviera, will be one of the county’s top scorers. He is great at driving to the basket and finishing through contact. He has improved his defense and playmaking tremendously. Perez heads into his senior season with an open recruitment and the possibility of winning a state championship. Despite the multitude of possibilities heading into his final season, he only has one goal and is empathic about it.

“My goal for this season is WINNING. The rest will come on its own.”
