Boyd Anderson season came to an end last season in a 55-51 heartbreaker versus the eventual state finalist Dillard Panthers. The Cobras, who lost their five leading scorers to graduation, will rely heavily upon their new point guard and this week’s player spotlight subject Martin Mercedes to lead their team back to the postseason. The 5 foot 10 speedster played at Miami Palmetto last season and discussed his reasons for finishing his high school career at Boyd Anderson.

“I think what triggered my decision to transfer to Boyd Anderson was the coaching staff and the players,” said Mercedes. “I was already around them due to playing travel ball alongside them with South Florida Elite. It made me interested in making a big move for my senior year and being able to perform on the big stage that Boyd Anderson puts their players.”

Mercedes is a lightning quick guard that plays with great pace. He brings tons of energy to every contest and takes pride in being a leader. He is an intriguing college prospect and someone coaches should be monitoring throughout his senior season. He talked about his recruiting status and what he is looking for in a school.

“Many schools have there eyes on me and have spoken to me. They are expecting me to have a great season. I am looking for a school with a coach who believes in my game and who pushes me to player at my highest level as a basketball player.”

The 5 foot 10 guard played with Boyd Anderson at team camps all summer and was one of South Florida’s breakout players. He led an uptempo offense and was a standout at USF, Source Hoops, and Palm Beach State team camps. Mercedes talked about what he brings to the table as a player.

“One of my strengths is creating for my teammates. I am strong at attacking the basket and have a good midrange pull up. I also take pride in being loud and bringing energy every game.”

Mercedes played his grassroots career with South Florida Elite. The senior point guard teamed with North Broward Prep point guard Dominick Denny to form an exciting and talented backcourt.  SFE always features team with multiple college prospects and this season was no exception. Mercedes recapped his travel ball summer.

“My travel season was great. I played with South Florida Elite since 8th grade so I have been very comfortable throughout my travel career. I performed at a very high level this year and turned a lot of heads. I also played with some great guys this year and learned a lot from being around them.”

Boyd Anderson is now a part of class 5a District 14 in the new FHSAA classifications. The district features American Heritage, Archbishop Mccarthy, Coconut Creek as well as perennial contenders Pines Charter and Northeast. Despite a challenging group of district opponents, Mercedes has lofty expectations for this season.

“Entering my senior season some goals I would like to accomplish are becoming a better leader, being able to shoot the three point shot better and going far in the playoffs with my team. I have a goal of winning states and building close relationships with my teammates and coaches. I feel like this season is going to be one to remember. We are ready to take on the challenge of being underdogs. We are ready to play basketball!”
