This week’s player spotlight Nicolas Louis-Jacques led Killian to a district championship and to the regional semi-finals during his breakout junior campaign. He averaged 16 points per game last season for a senior heavy Killian team and helped his squad capture their first district title in 12 years by hitting a buzzer beater three pointer against Miami Palmetto.

“My favorite basketball memory is scoring 30 points against our rival school Palmetto and hitting the game winning three pointer at the buzzer in the district championship game,” said Jacques.  “We had two tough games against them during the regular season where we fell short but we won the district championship.”

The 6-foot-4 guard is the lone returning starter for the Killian Cougars this season. He is the team captain and leader of a young and talented squad. He seems poised to lead the Cougars to another big season as they enter the new 5a District 16 which features Miami Jackson, Belen Jesuit, Terra, and Miami Northwestern.

“I feel like we can be a good team this upcoming season if everyone works to get better every single day. It has to start with me being a leader and setting the tone during practice by bringing energy. All it takes to be good is hard work, and if we outwork others we can be successful.”

Jacques is one of Miami-Dade County’s most skilled players. He can play and guard multiple positions and has emerged as one of South Florida’s top scorers. With his blend of skill and athleticism, he is a matchup nightmare for most high school programs.

“Scoring from all three levels are the strengths of my game. I shoot the ball really well off the dribble and catch and shoot from deep and mid range. I finish pretty well around the basket and I also play both sides of the floor by guarding the best player on the other team.”

The Miami Killian standout’s recruitment has picked up steam this summer. He has gained interest while playing with Killian in team camps and with Florida Pro and Team Knight in the travel circuit. He has drawn interest from several schools and is still open to new opportunities.

“I have been offered by Palm Beach Atlantic University and I have interest from other schools such as University of New Orleans, Barry University, FGCU, Yale, FAU, Murray State, UNC Charlotte, and Mercer University. I’m looking for a school that has a good academic program and I can also work and get better there every single day. I want the best fit for myself where I can play and help the team win.”

The 2nd team All-County selection is a tireless worker and is hoping his work ethic will catch on with his teammates. He is aiming to have a monster senior season that will help carry his team to another successful season and continue to facilitate his recruitment.

“My goals are to continue to get better every single day so it spreads and makes my teammates want to get better before, during and after practice. I know that if everyone works to get better everyday we will improve as a team quite significantly pretty quickly. I want this to be my best year of basketball that I’ve had and to turn a lot of college coaches heads. I know that this is my last year of high school basketball so I want to make it the best with my teammates and family.”

Look for Jacques to be a candidate to lead Miami-Dade County in scoring this season. He is an ultra competitive worker who is going to make whichever college program he decides on very fortunate to acquire a player of his caliber.
